The Strength From God (Luke 22:39-42)

Preached by pastor James Taylor on November 21, 2010.

The past 2 weeks have been of the most difficult for me: the anxiety in my heart was weighting over me. At this time I was reminded by the Holy Spirit of what my Savior did in his agony, as Luke depicts it.

For the first time ever, I realised the disciples were falling asleep because of sorrow (v.45). Everything was about to change and nothing sounded good. Interestingly, Jesus' response was totally different: He did the right thing: He prayed. At this moment, it's remarkable how swiftly God responded: an angel came!

Now, notice: when in his deepest despair, the One who suffered for our sins just prayed; and the more anxious He became, the more fervently He prayed. Hence, this is the most useful thing we can do as believers; it's the first thing we need to do.

We have before us the great temptation of taking things into our hands, but instead, let us pray. Let us beg God to bless. Let us beg for Him to open new doors. Let us beg for forgiveness. Let us beg for enlightening. Let us beg for refreshing. We serve the Almighty God.

I don't want us to be people who fall asleep. I want us to be people who pray boldly, who pray "Your will be done."
